Culturally Sensitive Therapists

What is a Culturally Sensitive Therapist?

Culturally sensitive therapy is a term used to define a therapist's understanding of their client’s background or ethnicity. It isn’t just about race, but it’s about: Age, disabilities, indigenous heritages, Race and Ethnicity, Gender/Sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.

What to Expect?

Clients who don’t feel that their therapist is able to understand them are more likely to drop out of treatment before any progress is made. However, therapists who practice cultural sensitivity do not typically stay with the standard therapeutic approach, and understand their client’s cultural background well enough to be able to custom their therapeutic approach.
